So, you’ve decided to go on a big trip. Whether you’re going to eat croissants near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, go on a safari in Africa, or swim with dolphins in the Caribbean, you’re finally taking the trip you’ve been dreaming of. It can be intimidating to book a big trip. There are so many pieces to consider and sometimes you just don’t even know where to begin. So, let’s start from the beginning.
- Book Flights, duh (6+ Months Before)
If you can’t get there, good luck on your “trip.” Once you book your flight, it all becomes official – yay! Unfortunately, unless you’re traveling alone (ballsy) it can be difficult sometimes to find dates and times that work for everyone you’re traveling with. Sometimes you just have to book spontaneously and not think too much on it.
2. Book a Hotel or Airbnb (3 Months Before)
Unless you want to rough it and sleep on the sweet streets of your destination city, or just risk it and try to find a room when you arrive, we recommend trying to book a hotel or Airbnb a few months prior to the trip. Always remember, location is EVERYTHING. Look for a hotel that is located near a lot of places that you’re going to want to visit on your trip.
3. Reservations (6 Weeks Before)
Time to get on Pinterest, Instagram, and any other platform to get your inspiration for what you want to do on your vacay. The earlier you book your reservations, the better. Some places require some extremely advanced booking and you don’t want to miss out, so get to planning. Also, tickets to shows and entrances to museums can be cheaper if purchased online and in advance. It also helps cutting down on wait time and standing in line, so that’s an added bonus.
4. Finalize Everything (4 Weeks Before)
It’s really important that you go back over the trip with your travel buddies and make sure you have everything correct: what you want to do, where you’re going, where you’re staying, etc. And once you’ve all agreed on the basics, call the places that you’ve made reservations and double check that your reservations are still in order. You don’t want to be surprised last minute.
5. Print Everything (1 Week Before)
Old school or not, you should definitely print a paper copy of your itinerary, all of your tickets, reservations, and addresses. You never know when you won’t be able to access WiFi. And if you miss your reservations because of something so simple, you know you’ll be P-I-S-S-E-D that you put in all of that effort for nothing.
We know being spontaneous can be fun or whatever, but having a liiiiittle organization beforehand can make things run a lot smoother and put you at ease. You put a lot of money towards this trip… you deserve to enjoy it!
