Every year you watch the popular Christmas movie, Home Alone, and wonder how Kevin’s parents manage to forget their son. Seriously, they went to freaking Paris and left Kevin in Chicago. How do they not notice their eight-year-old son is not with them? Well, 30 years later, viewers finally spotted a detail that helps explain things a little better.
We all know the film is about Kevin McCallister, the boy whose parents forget him in a hurry to leave for a Christmas vacation. He has to fend for himself in the meantime. Unfortunately, that means meeting some robbers who have their eye on the McCallister home. You know all of this already.
You also probably recall when the neighbor’s kid is confused for Kevin in the headcount. That doesn’t explain how they forgot him for so long. Think about it…the flight time from Chicago to Paris is approximately eight hours.
One Twitter user noticed something it’s taken the rest of us 30 whole years to figure out. In one of the beginning scenes the family sit down to chow down on large pizzas. Kevin and Buzz get into a fight (over pizza, obviously), knocking over bottles of soda all over the table. Kevin’s dad struggles to clean up the mess with bright red disposable napkins and then throws them in bins. What we never noticed, though, is he accidentally throws away Kevin’s plane ticket as he throws away everything into the bins.
It’s still a freaking long time to forget your kid, but this does explain a little better why his parents didn’t know he was missing. As far as they knew, they had all of their kids and tickets. There are still a whole lot of them, after all.
How has it taken us THIRTY years to notice this?!?!
