Get ready, because Disney+ officially has a release date for Cruella, the prequel to 101 Dalmatians. Who will star as the film’s villain? None other than the brilliant Emma Stone herself. Judging by pics, this prequel is going to be a great twist to the original film. From the the release date, to the plot, to who’s been cast, here’s everything you need to know about the Disney+ movie.
The Plot
As you would expect, in the prequel to 101 Dalmatians, Cruella will flashback to show why exactly Cruella de Vil came to hate dalmatians so much. In the original films (both the 1961 animated film and 1996 remake), Cruella is shown as a wealthy, demon lady who wants nothing more than to dog-nap dalmatian puppies so she can turn them into fur coats. But haven’t we all wondered at one point why she hates the breed so much? What could have possibly happened in her life to make her want to do such horrible things to dalmatians? The story is set in 1980s London, and follows young Cruella and her sidekicks, Jasper and Horace. From there, we find out what caused her to be the way she is.
The Cast
Per usual for Disney, the cast for Cruella is nothing but top tier. Emma Stone stars as the lead woman, Cruella de Vil. The role of Baroness (whatever that role will entail) will be played by Emma Thompson. Cruella’s lead henchmen, Jasper and Horace, will be played by Joel Fry (featured in Yesterday) and Paul Walter Hauser (who starred in a few episodes of Game of Thrones).
Disney unveiled the first look at Emma Stone as Cruella at the 2019 D23 expo. Stone can be seen wearing leather with Cruella’s famous black and white hair, clutching onto three dalmatians. Stone is completely unrecognizable. But, it’s still clearly the same terrifying villain we all know so well from 101 Dalmatians.
Release Date
Disney announced in February 2021 that the release date for Cruella on Disney will be May 2021. It was previously announced to come out May 28, 2021, but due to COVID, it is still unknown if that is the case or if there will be delays.
