Exciting news for those Netflix subscribers who close the application after a few episodes to play video games: you’ll soon be able to do it all on Netflix. According to the Bloomberg site specialist, Netflix plans to launch a video game service on its platform within a few months.
Netflix hired Mike Verdu as “Supervisor of Video Game Development”. His name is known to many video game specialists in the world. Verdu worked at Facebook developing the company’s Oculus virtual reality games. Prior to that, he worked at Electronic Arts, and Zynga (Farmville).
It’s clear that Netflix wants to up their game against their fierce competitors like HBO Max, Disney+, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV. Offering a new form of participatory content gives them the upper hand, and targets a younger audience, addicted to video games.
It’s not quite clear what form Netflix’s video games will take. The games could be games developed with licenses from certain original Netflix programs.
“This is a natural extension of Netflix’s content strategy, allowing it to mine intellectual property from popular shows like ‘Stranger Things.’ Though it may not generate much additional revenue, it will help deepen engagement and increase the service’s appeal and pricing power. Don’t expect this to be a turning point, but it shows that the company will explore new formats to increase time spent on the platform,” BI media analyst Geetha Ranganathan said.
But no need to worry about your bill increasing. The new offer should not add additional cost for subscribers who already pay for their subscription every month. However, as with many video games, it’s likely that in the long term, additional bonuses, packs or extensions may be paid for.
According to Bloomberg, Netflix intends to launch this new offer sometime in 2022 on its platform.
