Out of all of the celebrity collaborations, here’s a fun new one. John Mayer just launched a laundry detergent and fabric spray in collaboration with The Laundress, called Way Out West. The company is known for its high-quality fabric products for everyday essentials and hard-to-clean fabrics like cashmere and wool. This collaboration began when the brand reached out to Mayer six years ago when they noticed him using their products.
“I first discovered The Laundress products over six years ago, and we aligned so organically on the philosophy that if you love fashion, you should be into fabric care,” said Mayer. “I find something so meditative about the process, which makes laundry day a very soothing ritual for me. Way Out West is an extension and embodiment of that passion, and I am so proud to introduce everyone to the new collection.”
As of Nov. 3, customers can shop a collection that features a detergent to wash everyday items like T-shirts, socks, and underwear, and a spray to deodorize everyday objects or even the inside of shoes or a car. Both items contain a scent with rich notes of amyris, black pepper, neroli, cedar, sandalwood, and musk. Additionally, the bottles feature a print from one of the singer’s own garments.
“It’s the perfect scent for people going, ‘You smell good, what do you have on?'” Mayer said.
“Scents’ magic ability to transport you to another place or time made creating the Way Out West fragrance so special. John wanted to evoke a specific and nostalgic feeling with this scent: the warmth and comfort that home brings us,” said Lindsey Boyd, Co-Founder of The Laundress.
Mayer only learned how to take care of his clothing and do his own laundry in recent years. “I never cleaned up after myself,” he said. However, after years of getting his laundry dry-cleaned and relying on staff, the singer became passionate about hand-washing his clothing.
“It’s rare to find a partner who is genuinely enthusiastic about fabric care, which is why our relationship with John works so well. He is truly passionate about caring for his wardrobe, whether it’s a t-shirt or a vintage sweater. So while the partnership seems unexpected, it is actually a natural and authentic one for us,” said Brendan Taylor, The Laundress CEO.
Mayer also mentioned how it fulfills a need to be more mindful of the environment. Instead of dry-cleaning or throwing away items that are no longer in perfect conditions, taking care of them so that they last longer means less clothing in landfills. “I want to see people wear things into the ground,” Mayer said. Speaking of, the containers are all made with 100% post-consumer recycled plastic.
“I don’t make a dollar off of it, never wanted to. 50% of the proceeds goes to MALT, which is a great organization in Montana,” said Mayer, describing the collaboration. MALT (Montana Association of Land Trusts) helps generate open land conservation, outdoor recreation, and land trust community engagement.
