Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ Makes History, Earns Diamond Certification

Mariah Carey has officially made history with “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. While many fans have already loved the song on its own, now the singer’s beloved single has just been certified diamond by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), making it the first Christmas song to earn the award.

Songs become certified diamond once they have sold at least 10 million copies in the U.S. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was released back in 1994, and didn’t receive any kind of honor from the RIAA for more than a decade. In 2005, the hit went gold, and 14 years later it doubled its cumulative sales total, going platinum. Two years since going platinum, it has increased its performance nine times over, making it eligible to go diamond.

Carey was amazed to receive the award. “The continued love for my song never ceases to amaze me and fill my heart with a multitude of emotions,” she said in a statement. “It blows my mind that ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ has endured different eras of the music industry. The RIAA Diamond award?! Wow! I’m so fortunate to have the greatest fans on Earth, my Lambily, who continue to support my legacy. I love you.”

The news comes shortly after Billboard adjusted its holiday rankings and ranked “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as the best Christmas song. It recently re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 and currently sits at number 36.

However, Mariah is the first and only artist to have a RIAA-certified Diamond Christmas song, so it’s clear who is the real #1 here.
