Another day, another text that makes you go “What the actual heck were they thinking?!” Here’s how to decipher the meaning and send a no-regrets response.
- The text: “You up?”
- You think: Obviously, I’ve been up for the past 12+ hours. Thanks for noticing.
- Response: Nothing, for now. Wait until tomorrow to text back.
- The text: “Send me a pic ;)”
- You think: I’m totally going to end up in his group’s text chain. And I’m in no mood to see his junk.
- Response: Assuming you actually like this guy, try getting your point across in a flirty way. Let him know he’s moving too fast by sticking to emojis. Send some flirty emojis then say, “That’s all you’re getting for now.”
- The text: “How’s your day going? Let me know how the interview went!”
- You think: Ugh! What are we? Pen pals? Ask me out!
- Response: Offer an idea they have to either accept or refuse. Including something they’ve mentioned in the past is a bonus too. Like, “Hey, it went awesome! BTW I know you’ve been wanting to see (insert band here). They’re coming to town Friday night and I’m going. Wanna join?”
- The text: “Sorry for dropping off for a little while”
- You think: Well how ~convenient~. Right when I begin to get over them, they pop right back into my life. Here come a rush of extremely confusing emotions.
- Response: You can either say, “Yeah, you disappeared for ‘a little while’. Should I take that to mean you can continue to move on to other people?” OR you can hit him with that one word “Really?” and let him do the work.
- The text: “I was so productive today…Prepped chicken for dinner, went to the foot doctor for my toe fungus, and now releasing the day in the bathroom.”
- You think: Wow! TMI! Keep it to yourself or get a diary dude.
- Response: You don’t want to make them feel guilty for trusting you, so say something like, “I love that you feel so comfortable sharing with me, but I don’t think we’re there yet. I’m not ready to share that much info right now.”
