Cast

You star Jenna Ortega took to Instagram on May 19, 2021 to announce that she will lead as Wednesday Addams in the new spinoff. Her caption read, “New chapter. Hope I can do Wednesday Addams justice. *snaps twice*.”

Ortega is following in the footsteps of many women who have played Wednesday. Of these women include Christina Ricci, who took the role of Wednesday to the big screen in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values.

It was no surprise that Netflix offered Ricci a role in the new series. In March 2022, Deadline reported Ricci had signed on to be in the cast, though currently, her role is being kept secret.

In addition to Ortega and Ricci, Catherine Zeta-Jones stars as matriarch Morticia Addams and Luis Guzmán plays Gomez Addams. Issac Ordonez has been cast as Wednesday’s brother, Pugsley, George Burcea will play Lurch, and Victor Dorobantu to be the expressive hand known as “Thing.”

Deadline also revealed Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie landed a lead role as Larissa Weems, principal of Nevermore Academy, the school Wednesday attends, and who “still has an ax to grind with her former classmate Morticia Addams.” Further casting includes, Tommie Earl Jenkins, William Houston, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Calum Ross, Johnna Dias Watson, Iman Marson, and Oliver Watson. Other co-stars that were announced in the fall of 2021 include Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Georgie Farmer, Moosa Mostafa, Emma Myers, Naomi J. Ogawa, Joy Sunday, and Percy Hynes White.

Filming Updates

Filming for the spinoff began in September 2021. The series was originally expected to finish in February 2022, but an actress’s exit from the show extended filming to the end of March.

All eight episodes were directed by Tim Burton, and Smallville‘s team of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are the showrunners. In December 2021, Deadline announced that Danny Elfman, who worked with Burton on Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, would create an original theme song for Wednesday and the show’s musical score.

Plot

Although not much is known about the new series, a general synopsis has been released.

“Wednesday is a comedic, supernaturally-infused coming-of-age series that follows the teenage girl’s years as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous spree that has terrorized the town, and solve a mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago – all while navigating her new relationships at Nevermore.”

Release Date

There’s no specific release date just yet, unfortunately. At this point we can only assume that Wednesday will be headed this way by the end of 2022.
