Flip-Flops Are The Shoe Of The Summer

Flip-Flops Are The Shoe Of The Summer

When we used to talk about flip-flops, we always thought about the plastic flip-flops that separated the toes that we wore to the pool or the beach. Today, they’re still popular for those trips, but they’re also popular among fashion enthusiasts as well.

Originally brought to the public by Brazilian brand Havainas in 1962, flip-flops have been a popular shoe choice among many people. But it’s only recently that their fashion potential has come to light. In the 90s, the platform flip-flop came about and allowed this shoe to enter the very closed circle of it-shoes. And now that it’s officially sandals season again, the fashion flip-flop is on the rise again. Essentially, this is an elevated thong-toe sandal that isn’t flimsy or rubbery like your poolside or beach footwear. Instead, it’s sturdy enough for a good commute.

Trendier styles come with a nice heel or pumped-up platform sole for added height. The Row’s minimalist Ginza sandals have a thickened sole and sleek strap. The Attico’s Selene style, and Garbiela Hearst’s artsy Lou flip-flops, feature a patchwork rainbow sole, whipstitching, and a crotchet upper. Shoppers looking for a nostalgic purchase may consider Coperni’s retro flip-flops. Almost every look from the brand’s spring/summer 2022 was paired with platform flip-flops, some including pearly sequins that caught the light as models walked.

Miu Miu’s sporty silver sandals are great party flip-flops, as are the studded gold heels by Versace and feather-trimmed styles from Rejina Pyo.

Consider this your new favorite footwear this summer.
