Serena Williams Is Retiring From Tennis

Serena Williams has officially announced her retirement after hinting multiple times of hanging up her tennis racket.

The tennis legend, who has no less than 23 Grand Slam titles to her name, spoke to Vogue about the retirement. She told Vogue, “For me there is no happiness in this subject. I know it is not common to say, but I feel a lot of pain.”

“It’s the hardest thing I can ever imagine. I hate it. I hate that I have to stand at this crossroads. I keep saying to myself: I wish it could be easy for me, but it isn’t. I’m torn: I don’t want it to be over, but at the same time I’m ready for what’s to come.”

She continued, “I’ve never liked the word pension. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I see this as a transition, but I want to be careful with that word because it has a very specific and important meaning for a community. Perhaps ‘evolution’ is the best word to describe what is to come.”

Called the Greatest of All Time in tennis, Serena Williams has a career spanning three decades and has been ranked number one in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association numerous times. In her interview with Vogue, the tennis champ admitted that she would like to expand her family. Williams, who’s married to Alexis Ohanian, is already a mother to four-year-old Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.
