Kate Middleton is starting a new royal Christmas tradition.
This year, Kate Middleton will return to Westminster Abbey to host a special Christmas carol concert for the second year in a row supported by The Royal Foundation, Kensington Palace announced on Friday. The festive event is set to take place on December 15, and plans to pay homage to the life and legacy of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away this past September.
“The carol service will celebrate and showcase the joy that human connection can bring: forging friendships and strengthening communities, creating legacies of humility and kindness, whilst also providing relief and comfort in times of difficulty or loss. The service will combine both traditional and modern elements, reaching people of all faiths and none,” reads the press release from Kensington Palace.
Organized by the Queen of Wales, the event will welcome people of all faiths. Viewers can expect to see the London church lit up by festive decorations. Featured talent will include carols sung by the abbey’s world-renowned choir and musical performances and readings delivered by special guests from across the UK. Among the evening’s attendees will include the British royal family, charity workers, volunteers, and armed forces personnel.
Like last year, the concert will be filmed and fans can tune into the fun when the special airs on ITV on Christmas Eve.
This will be the second time that the princess will host a Christmas service. Last year’s service, held at Westminster Abbey, honored their communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the service, Kate also treated guests to a surprise piano performance at the abbey. In her first public performance, the princess accompanied Scottish singer Tom Walker on his song “For Those Who Can’t Be Here.”
“Without doubt, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” the 30-year-old artist said of their duet. “I thought she absolutely smashed the performance; it’s not easy to just jump behind a piano with a bunch of musicians you’ve never played with before and record live takes to camera, but she completely nailed it.”
The Abbey Choir also sang at the show, which also saw performances from Ellie Goulding, Tom Walker, and Leona Lewis. Prince William also delivered a reading from Luke 2:1-7 during the service.
