Fans of The Princess Diaries have been long awaiting a trilogy for years. And now Disney has officially confirmed that The Princess Diaries 3 will be happening.
On November 15, The Hollywood Reporter announced that The Princess Diaries 3 was officially in the works at Disney. Deadline has also confirmed this news with Disney. The new film will follow 2001’s The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, both directed by the late Garry Marshall.
The Princess Diaries follows an awkward American teen who learns she’s heir to the throne of the kingdom of Genovia. The family film became a box office hit with $165 million in global ticket sales. The sequel was equally successful in theaters with $134 million worldwide. Since the popularity of first two films, rumors have been circulating about The Princess Diaries 3. But this is Disney’s biggest attempt to transport audiences back to Genovia.
Not much has been released about the new movie, but we do know that Aadrita Mukerji is writing the script. Additionally, Debra Martin Chase, who already worked on the other films, will return as an executive producer, this time with Melissa K. Stack.
Unfortunately, as Variety reported, both Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews are unsure to return. Even though we’re not sure whether the pair will be reprising their old roles as Mia Thermopolis and Queen Clarisse Renaldi, we do know that Hathaway was into the idea of returning not that long ago.
Just in October 2022, Hathaway spoke to Entertainment Tonight and said she, “would more than entertain” the idea of a threequel. “I’m pulling for it,” she continued. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work.” Sequel-star Raven-Symoné already said similar words back in 2017. And Meg Cabot, author of the original Princess Diaries book series, also teased the third film that same year.
