Tom Felton Opened Up About His Alcohol Addiction After ‘Harry Potter’ Success

There’s no denying the success of the Harry Potter films was overwhelming and brought an absurd amount of fame to the very young actors. The star-studded cast featured Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Gary Oldman (Sirius Black), Alan Rickman (Severus Snape), Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort), Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall), Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory), Bonnie Wright), Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore), and Tom Felton, the iconic Draco Malfoy.

Even though Tom Felton never caused a scandal, the actor, 35, explained that he went through a dark time during his adolescence due to the overwhelming success obtained too quickly from the Harry Potter films. In his autobiography, Beyond the wand: The magic and mayhem of growing up a wizard, Felton opened up for the first time about his difficulties with alcohol and rehab, where he has always been able to count on the support of friend Emma Watson.

“I went from not being particularly interested in alcohol to regularly drinking a few pints a day before the sun went down, and even a few shots of whiskey to go with it all,” says Tom Felton in the book where he also reveals how his addiction interfered with his career. “My alcoholism has gotten to the point where I drink even while I’m working. I showed up on set unprepared. I was no longer the professional I wanted to be,” he said.

At first Felton wasn’t sure he wanted to include his struggles with alcohol in his memoir, but was encouraged by Watson to tell without any restraint or fear.

“She gave me the strength to say: ‘This will help'” Tom Felton explained to USA Today. “It wouldn’t have been right to talk only about beautiful things. After her encouragement I found the confidence to say, ‘You know what? It happened and this is part of my life'” continued Felton, who now, after multiple hospitalizations, says he is no longer afraid to say, “I’m not well.”
