For decades, the Christmas routine of British royal family consisted of a train journey to Sandringham estate, then a traditional Christmas Eve dinner, exchange of nice gifts between the family members, and mass in the little church of Santa Maria Maddalena on Christmas Day, after the usual walk between two wings of crowds in the village. Even in the royal estates of London, tradition takes over: the castles are decorated, lights and decorations, carrying on a tradition since the 1800s. In 2020, the family had to pause the routine due to unfortunate circumstances. But in 2021, the family met in Windsor to celebrate the first Christmas without Prince Philip, who passed away in the spring. Christmas 2022, however, will be quite different now that Queen Elizabeth will no longer be there, and King Charles and his Queen consort Camilla are hosting.
Word on the street is, Sandringham in Norfolk will once again be the center of the festivities. A source close to King Charles shared that the new king would like to keep the tradition, “even if it will be a very strange time to spend together without the queen.” The intention is to hold a big celebration, since the last two years the family meetings and lunches have been difficult to organize. And to do the honors of the house will be queen consort Camilla, who has earned in the last 15 years, a place of honor in the royal family by virtue of her commitment and dedication.
Royal correspondent Victoria Murphy told ABC that this may be the first Christmas that, with Camilla as hostess, Charles’ and his wife’s children and grandchildren can all spend the holidays as a family.
“The intention is there. And it is possible that the queen consort wants to officially integrate her family into the celebrations at Sandringham,” said Murphy. “Harry and Meghan are unlikely to spend Christmas with the royal family,” another source shared with the Daily Beast.
