Six years ago, dating looked very different. It was the beginning of dating apps, the start of the term “ghosting”, and much more. So what’s it even like to be dating again after a six year break in today’s age? Drew Barrymore told Whoopi Goldberg on Thursday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show that she’s officially dating again, after six years of being single.
Drew Barrymore divorced actor Will Kopelman in 2016, after four years of marriage. Together, they have two daughters, Olive (10) and Frankie (8). In the past, the actress explained that she took her divorce “really hard” and felt like she wasn’t ready to love again. However, on the recent episode, Barrymore says that she’s gotten a little too comfortable being all by herself, devoting herself to her daughters and her career. The actress says she was fine as she was. “Because it had been so many years, I started to worry a little, like I was too good at being alone,” she said last week. She didn’t begin dating out of necessity, but out of choice, to get out of her comfort zone.
Barrymore wrote in a blog post in October, “I have had the honor and a pleasure to actually work on myself and learn what parenting is, again something I was not exactly clear on growing up and I’ve had many learning curves thrown my way. I’ve been intimidated. I’ve been triumphant. I’ve been asked to be educated in every way I can be.” The actress added, “I am just in a completely different place in my life and maybe in the near future I will get into a relationship… but it simply hasn’t been my priority. So I’m not a person who needs sex and has to go out there and engage with people on that level. I am someone who is deeply committed to fostering how young girls, my daughters, and myself as a woman, are supposed to function in this world!”
“When I was young, I tried everything. I’ve done everything. That’s why I’m so boring now,” she joked on the Drew’s News podcast earlier this month.
The actress was also previously married to producer Jeremy Thomas from 1994 to 1995 and comedian Tom Green from 2001 to 2002.
