Taylor Swift is dipping her toes in the world of feature directing with Searchlight Pictures. The singer, songwriter, and director has written an original script, while the movie will be produced by Searchlight.
“Taylor is a once in a generation artist and storyteller. It is a genuine joy and privilege to collaborate with her as she embarks on this exciting and new creative journey,” said Searchlight president David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield.
Taylor Swift recently won a best direction award at the 2022 MTV VMAs, making her the first and only solo artist to receive the award twice. She’s been honored this award for her directional work on “All Too Well: The Short Film” and “The Man.” The singer is an 11-time Grammy winner and the only female artist to win album of the year on three different occasions. This past October, Swift came out with Midnights, her 10th studio album.
Swift wrote and directed the 14-minute production of “All Too Well: The Short Film,”inspired by the 10-minute version of her beloved song “All Too Well”, which screened at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival. The movie is also eligible to be nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the upcoming 95th Oscars ceremony in March 2023.
Swift gave insight about the making of All Too Well: The Short Film at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and said she needed time in order to complete the film.
“It was a baby steps process,” Swift said. “It wasn’t like I woke up one day and I was like, ‘You know what I want to do? Direct.’ That was never something that I was programmed to say to myself because I didn’t go to film school. I’ve been on the set of 60-plus music videos. And I’ve learned a lot from that process.”
The singer has also acted on screen, appearing in Valentine’s Day, Cats, and Amsterdam.
