So much of how we feel each day has to do with the quality of our thoughts. We are capable of choosing our thoughts and creating positive ones. Even though we can’t see them, our thoughts are very real and are responsible for nearly everything that happens in our lives. Depending on the content of our thoughts, we can either create a life of peace, love and happiness – or we can design a life filled with chaos, betrayal, and fear. It depends on the thoughts we choose.
- Choose a Positive Starting Point for Your Day
It’s the first few moments of consciousness, right after we wake up, that we enter the mental space that will occupy much of the next 24 hours. If the first we do is snag our phones to check social media and see depressing headlines, we’re destined for a bad day.
Instead, take a moment to reflect on gratitude by creating a gratitude list and talking to yourself with loving, kind language. Or maybe your first few moments can be spent connecting with your pets, playing uplifting music, making a good breakfast, doing yoga, or enjoying a sunrise. There are many things you can do: the point is to make a choice to begin your day in a positive mindset.
2. Learn to Let Go
When relationships, jobs, finances, or other plans don’t go as planned, the best thing to do is to let go. Learn to focus on what’s ahead of you and look forward to new opportunities rather than holding tight to the past.
3. Change Your Vocabulary
The brain, as we’ve now learned, is incredibly adaptable and highly sensitive to the words that we use daily. How you describe and frame your experiences create the thoughts and feelings these experiences cause. Paying careful attention to the words you use is an exercise in mindfulness and will alter your day-to-day mindset.
This doesn’t mean you can brush away real emotions with mere words, but our words do matter a lot and they can help shape our reality.
3. Be More Accepting
When you stop holding grudges or living in a place of perpetual scarcity, you may notice a change in mental mindset. Accept things as they are with a level of understanding, forgiving situations for what they are, forgiving others, and moving forward.
4. Don’t Self-Punish
Beating yourself up for mistakes, failures, and poor choices will only hold you at a standstill. Try to refrain from using negative self-talk to address yourself; simply learn from your mistakes and carry lessons into new experiences.
5. Don’t Compare Yourself
Don’t focus on what other people and what you don’t. Be happy for what others and be proud of what you’ve accomplished. Don’t subscribe to the narrative, “Oh, they’re so lucky, I could never…” Be happy with who you are.
6. Don’t Let Fears Dictate Your Life
Don’t let self-doubt rule all your decisions. Go for big dreams, reach out to connections, and try until you succeed at something that feels right. Let go of the “I can’t” mindset and start believing that you can do anything you want. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
7. Celebrate Small Wins
Celebrate the little things. Our lives are made up of the little things, after all. So if we choose to be positive people who celebrate every little small win, success, accomplishment, or blessing, we spend a lot of our time feeling grateful and happy.
