Between the best face creams and new aesthetic medicine treatments that regenerate skin, we spend loads of time and money perfecting our anti-aging skincare routine. Unfortunately, without even realizing it, we form bad habits every day that significantly add to the premature aging of the skin, by accentuating the formation of wrinkles, brown spots and swelling of the epidermis. Recognizing these bad habits is the first step towards fresher, more glowing skin.
- Problem: Always Sleeping On The Same Side
Many of us have a favorite position for falling asleep. However, always being on the same side is not ideal for the skin on your face when pressed on the pillow in the same places. It’s how “sleep wrinkles” are formed, which can become deep and visible.
Solution:
Experts advise to sleep on your back. However, if this seems to be bothersome or unrelaxing, one trick is to use an anti-aging pillow specially designed for side sleepers, such as the Sleep and Glow pillow, which lays the face on its side, but doesn’t crush it. If you insist on training yourself to sleep on your back, there’s even a pillow for that.
2. Problem: Mouth Breathing
While it may happen during the day, it’s especially likely to happen at night when you release tension in the lower face. Breathing with your mouth open is not good for your health, both in terms of the respiratory tract, your palate and the structure of your jaw. The appearance of your face is also affected: the lower part is less defined, the skin slackens, the wrinkles of the nasolabial fold are more marked and the double chin more obvious.
Solution:
There are exercises you can practice daily to train yourself to breathe through your nose. One exercise, for example, is to place a thin object, such as a chain, between your closed lips and keep it that way for ten minutes every hour. This will help train your brain to change the habit.
3. Problem: Chew On One Side Only
One-sided chewing is common. The correct way to chew is alternating food between the two sides of the mouth. If this bad habit is constant, it can harm the symmetry of the face.
Solution:
Paying attention helps to avoid it.
4. Problem: Not Wearing Sunscreen
Applying sunscreen only in the summer or at the beach is a horrible habit because it accelerates the aging process of the skin. The screen must be applied every day if you expose yourself to the sun, even for quick moments of the day: the rays you receive during a walk or on the way to work are the same as those you receive at the beach.
Solution:
Find a sunscreen with a light texture, comfortable to wear during the day under makeup. Maybe even find products that allow you to reapply protection throughout the day, such as powder.
5. Problem: Exaggerate Facial Expressions
Even though a nice smile is the most gorgeous expression on the face, too much strain on the muscles, for example by frowning, can cause more wrinkles.
Solution:
The best thing to do is keep smiling freely. Just try not to tense the forehead or area between the eyebrows too much, and don’t open your eyes too wide to express your amazement.
6. Problem: Looking At Your Phone With Your Head Down
“Tech Neck” is a term that’s been formed from when people have issues due to staring at their smartphones with their head down too much. This results in poor posture which can lead to kyphosis, but more importantly to sagging of the neck muscles, formation of skin laxity and a more pronounced double chin.
Solution:
Obviously, you’ll have to raise your head, adopt a good posture and *gasp* look at your phone less.
7. Problem: Not Washing Your Face At Night
Some celebs (hello, Kate Hudson) don’t wash their face in the morning, and that’s fine if you have particularly delicate skin. On the flip side, not washing it in the evening is a tragic habit. During the day, microparticles of dust, pollution and impurities settle on the face. Not removing them means leaving them overnight, which is the most important time for the skin.
Solution:
Find a face wash that feels good and has a texture that’s easy to remove quickly. This way, the cleansing will also be able to withstand the day. Try:
Youth To The People Kale and Green Tea Facial Cleanser
Tatcha Rice Wash
