Five Cafés You Absolutely Need To Know In NYC

From a French cafe with the best cookie in the city to NYC’s first Department of Health approved dog-friendly café… here’s a guided tour of some cafés you must try if you ever visit New York City.

Maman

Maman is a beloved New York City bakery and French-inspired café that set out to focus on coffee and pastries more than anything else. Maman is mainly inspired by the two founding partner’s childhood memories in the South of France, with the menu largely focused on recipes they learned from their mothers (Maman means “mother” in French). One particular item that stands out about this café is their famous nutty chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was added to the menu in 2014, and exploded with popularity. So much so that it ended up on Oprah’s “Favorite Things” list in 2017.

2. Russ & Daughters Cafe

Russ & Daughters dates back four generations of the Russ family. The cafe, Russ & Daughters Cafe, first opened back in 2014, on the date of the 100th anniversary of the mother store, Russ & Daughters, on Houston Street. Even though Russ & Daughters has always been a neighborhood landmark, it’s lacked a seating area the the café now provides.

3. Amelie

The French bistro/wine bar has a lovely charm and exquisite menu of comforting dishes like warm goat cheese salad, roasted chicken and ratatouille. It has multiple locations, both perfect for sitting outside and enjoying a glass of wine.

4. Boris & Horton

Boris & Horton is NYC’s first Department of Health approved dog-friendly café. Come enjoy a cup of joe, beer, wine, or snacks. To make this café even more pup-friendly, they also host adoption events and fundraisers to help homeless dogs find their forever home.

5. Scen

Scen is NYC’s first-ever ‘zero-waste’ cafe. This cafe is completely plant-based and zero-waste. The cafe offers everything from bagels and bowls, to sushi and adaptogenic super drinks. Scen’s packaging is 100% compostable and their ingredients are always sustainably-sourced. In addition to the physical cafe, Scen also has a digital shop where customers can purchase other healthy snacks, obviously delivered in zero-waste packaging.

One of these cafés is sure to be your favorite when you visit.
