The dark forest is alive and well in Paris, as Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli Haute Couture spring summer 2023 reinterprets Dante’s Inferno poem, while the three fairs of the mountain beyond which is salvation parade, interpreted in turn by three of the most famous top models in the world. The leopard, the lion, and the wolf walk the Schiaparelli runway, once again as the queens of fashion – Namoi Campbell, Irina Shayk and Shalom Harlow.
Each of the animals represent three sins in Dante’s Inferno: lust, pride, and greed. Shalom Harlow is a rare snow leopard, with gaping jaws on an animalier strapless sheath dress. Irina Shayk wore a black velvet dress accompanied by a majestic lion’s head with a combed mane showing its fangs. Naomi Campbell had the black she-wolf and her orange eyes transformed into a long-haired coat wrapped around the model. The three sins intersect in high fashion and in Dante’s writings. In the meantime, animals also arrived in the first row in an intersection, which saw Kylie Jenner wearing the same dress as Irina as she walked the Schiaparelli catwalk.
Social media has blown up in protests saying that Daniel Roseberry has sent “a wrong message,” but although identical to the animals represented, they are actually hyper-realistic replicas in resin and fake fur, therefore completely recreated in animal welfare that have acted as a referee to the designer, in addition to celebrating the Italian work of Dante Alighieri. Since there’s been so much turbulence by today’s fashion show, it may be the time to address animal rights.
