Viola Davis has officially become the 18th person to achieve EGOT status – winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award – as she took home a Grammy last night. Davis completed her award collection by winning best audio book for her audiobiography Finding Me.
“I wrote this book to honor the six-year-old Viola,” said the star. “To honor her life, her joy, her trauma, everything.”
In 2015, Viola Davis won the Emmy for best lead actress in the series How to Get Away with Murder. She won the best supporting actress Oscar for Fences in 2017. The star has two Tony Awards for her theater work – featured actress in a play for King Hedley II (2001) and lead actress in a play for Fences (2010).
“It has been such a journey, Davis said in her acceptance speech at the Grammys, announcing jubilantly. “I just EGOT!” she continued, becoming emotional as she thanked her family for being “the best chapter in my book.”
The last star to earn the EGOT was Jennifer Hudson in 2022, after she won the Tony Award for co-producing the musical “A Strange Loop.”
Some of the other EGOT winners include John Legend and Rita Moreno.
In a January interview with the Recording Academy, Davis reflected on her career and Grammy nod. She said achieving EGOT status would be a “huge accomplishment.”
“I think that everybody wants their life to mean something,” she said at the time. “I believe in the Cherokee birth blessing, which is, ‘May you live long enough to know why you were born.’ I do believe that you literally wanna blow a hole through this world in whatever way you can.”
“A lot of people don’t know how to do that. A lot of people haven’t found that thing that they’re passionate about, that they can do. Some have. But we all are looking for that, blowing a hole through this earth before we leave it. I think about that in my work a lot. I really found that thing that I love to do. So I always wanna make it meaningful.”
