‘The Crown’ Season 6 Will Show Princess Diana’s Final Days

From the events narrated to the cast, we’ve got the answers to all the questions about the final season of The Crown.

Season five has come to a close and now we just have to wait for the final season, which will be set between the 90s and early 2000s, and will deal with the final days before her death, and of course, the fatal accident in Paris. Per IndieWire, Netflix has confirmed that the series will only show events before and after the car crash, with a spokesperson saying that “the exact moment of the crash impact will not be shown.”

Originally, the events of that decade were supposed to be fit into one season, the fifth, which was supposed to be the last. In 2020, creator of the series Peter Morgan announced that there would be a sixth season to allow for greater insight into the events.

“When we started discussing the storylines for series five, it quickly became clear that to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we would have to go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” said Morgan in a statement. “To be clear, the sixth series will not come close to present day, it will simply allow us to cover the same period but in more detail.”

Elizabeth Debicki will continue playing the role of Princess Diana, already portraying the Princess of Wales in the fifth season.

“Princess Diana’s spirit, words and deeds still live in the hearts of so many people. It is real privilege and honor for me to be a part of this masterful series, which has captivated me completely since the very first episode,” said Debicki.

Imelda Staunton (best known for her role as Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter films) will reprise her role as Queen Elizabeth II in the final season. Other returning actors include Lesley Manville (Princess Margaret), Jonathan Pryce (Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh), Dominic West (Prince Charles), Olivia Williams (Camilla Parker Bowles) and Bertie Carvel (Tony Blair).

Rufus Kampa will star as a 15-year-old Prince William and Ed McVey will play the Duke throughout his late teens and early adult years. Meg Bellamy will take on the role of Kate Middleton. The role of Prince Harry, however, is yet to be announced.

Kampa will portray Prince William as he deals with grief following his mother’s death, and Ed McVey will play the period when he courted Kate Middleton at The University of St. Andrews in 2001.

Show creator Peter Morgan previously confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s romance will not be featured in The Crown season six.

He said, “I just think you get so much more interesting [with time]. Meghan and Harry are in the middle of their journey, and I don’t know what their journey is or how it will end.” He continued, “One wishes some happiness, but I’m much more comfortable writing about things that happened at least 20 years ago. I sort of have in my head a 20-year rule.”

Netflix hasn’t confirmed when season six will arrive, but going by previous release dates, we can expect the series to be released around November 2023. Of course, this may change due to filming for the final season was put on pause following Queen Elizabeth’s death in September 2022.

Morgan explained his decision to put filming on hold in an interview with Deadline, saying, “The Crown is a love letter to her and I’ve nothing to add for now, just silence and respect. I expect we will stop filming out of respect too.”

When The Crown first began filming in 2016, director Stephen Daldry hinted that there were plans in place if and when the Queen passed, saying (via Deadline), “None of us known when that time will come but it would be right and proper to show respect to the Queen. It would be a simple tribute and a mark of respect She’s a global figure and it’s what we should do.”

With that in mind, the final season of The Crown could possible air in December 2023 or even early 2024.
