Side Parts Are Making A Comeback

The popular millennial-staple side-part hairstyle was defined “un-chic” Gen Z, and ever since people have either avoided the hairstyle or attempted to fight back. Now, however, people are fighting back more than ever. Side parts are more alive than ever. Sorry, Gen Z, you can’t keep a good thing down forever.

Tom Smith, trend forecaster and hairstylist, spoke with Harper’s Bazaar. He said, “Side partings have been growing in popularity once more and leading the way have been various celebrities throughout fashion week and awards season.”

“I tend to favor a middle part, but it feels like a good time to flip the parting onto the side,” George Northwood, hairstylist and owner of the George Northwood salon, told Vogue. “It suddenly makes things feel fresh and new, especially with a bob.” He gushed about Emma Corrin’s side part in Lady Chatterley’s Lover. “Another good example of the hairstyle in action is Alexa Chung, whose latest looks feature a number of side partings; she adds an embellished barrette for extra dazzle.”

The hair part has already been featured on many red carpets this year, often paired with sleek styles that are either swept up and sharp or styled down and sleek. “When coupled with a wave, a side parting can really evoke Hollywood glamour,” Smith continued, “but a lot of what we’re seeing more recently is a sleeker, less voluminous option.”

Smith thinks there’s another reason this hairstyle is returning in 2023. “Right now there is a real desire for more angular-looking faces – ‘snatched’ cheekbones and tight jawlines are becoming more talked about and are a focus of make-up artists and aesthetic practitioners. Wearing a sleek side parting is a great way for one’s hairstyle to contribute to a sharper, more contoured appearance, by adding more angles and height to the face. A middle parting can often show off a symmetrical face and accentuate the eyes and lips, while a side parting will draw attention to other diagonal lines such as the contour of the cheekbone and jawline.” This goes along with why there have been so many sightings of the hairstyle paired with sleek updos this season, as well as flatter, more modern versions of glam waves on the red carpet.
