Kate Middleton Celebrated Mardi Gras By Making Pancakes In A Nursing Home

Kate Middleton went from glam at the 2023 BAFTA Awards on Sunday to getting messy in the kitchen at a nursing home for Mardi Gras on Tuesday. The Princess of Wales followed her award show appearance alongside her husband Prince William with a trip to the Oxford House Nursing Home in Slough in Berkshire, England.

Upon arrival, the royals met with staff and residents to understand how the home is prioritizing the needs of its patients. Because it was Mardi Gras, otherwise known as Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day in the UK, Princess Kate joined along with some of the residents in cooking some pancakes. However, she proved even royals can’t do everything. Her first attempt got stuck to her frying pan and she had to use a spatula to scrape it off before she was able to flip it. “I’m sorry,” Kate told her fellow chefs with a laugh in a video shared on Twitter by Matt Wilkinson from The Sun. “I haven’t done you justice,” she continued.

“All the ones that were made earlier are much nicer than this one!” she joked in a video shared in another Tweet by Richard Palmer of the Daily Express.

Even though she didn’t nail the flipping technique, she shared with one of the residents there, Sheila, that pancakes are a signature part of her family’s holiday celebrations. “I either get pancakes stuck on the floor or the ceiling, but the children are very well and we will be making our own pancakes this evening with the children,” she said, according to a tweet from Isabella Perrin from the Bucks Free Press.

The nursing home’s head chef, Anna Wright, told Hello! magazine that Princess Kate “did a very good job.”

“I think maybe the mixture was a bit thick, and she was under quite a bit of pressure,” Wright said. “She said she will make them for her kids, but I’m sure she will make better.”

Although Kate may not have shown off her perfect pancake skills, Prince William has previously bragged that his wife is a “very good” cook. During a trip to the Together as One charity in January, Prince William joined a cooking class teaching young people how to make easy, nutritious meals that won’t break the bank. In the lesson, the prince was questioned about his chef expertise, to which he responded, “I do a bit of cooking, not much though. Catherine’s very good though.” He does have one specialty, though. “I do a mean steak,” he said, but, “My sauces come out quite dry or lumpy – I’ve got to work on those!”

Oxford House Nursing Home provides nursing care for up to 34 residents. The organization also operates Oxford House Community Care, which supports enabled people in the local area to reside safely and independently in their own homes.
