We’re quickly approaching the most awaited ceremony of 2023. On May 6, King Charles will officially be crowned at Westminster Abbey. However, King Charles won’t be the only one to receive a new title. According to many British newspapers, such as the Daily Mail, Camilla Parker Bowles will receive the title of queen, and her queen consort title will fall. In February 2022, Queen Elizabeth had expressed the wish that, at the right time, Camilla would be known as queen consort and “now Buckingham Palace is set to go further, according to insiders,” said the Daily Mail. In an official statement released by Buckingham palace on the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne, the late Queen Elizabeth II said, “It is my sincere wish that, when the time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
Palace officials area appealing to precedents in order to justify this choice. From 1936 to 1952, she was simply known as Queen Elizabeth, not Queen consort Elizabeth, during the reign of her husband King George VI. Also, when Queen Victoria died and was succeeded by her son Edward VII, his wife went from being called the Princess of Wales to Queen Alexandra, without any use of a consort.
According to the Daily Mail, the first sign of change was present when Camilla renamed the Duchess of Cornwall’s Reading Room to the Queen’s Reading Room. Obviously it was spread that the consort title was absent from the new wording. The outlet reports that the Court Circular – the official register of royal engagements – may also soon reflect the change.
“The Reading Room was a sign of that. Her Majesty is the Queen after all,” the source said to the Daily Mail. “Prince Philip was Prince Consort officially, but he wasn’t known as Prince Consort,” a source continued. “There’s a view in the Palace that Queen Consort is cumbersome and it may be simpler for Camilla to be known just as Queen when the time is right.”
However, the source explains, “The Queen would of course still be Queen Consort so the Palace of course wouldn’t stop anyone calling Her Majesty that if they so chose,” Of course, the news is greeted with some distress among British citizens, who have for nearly 70 years called Elizabeth II queen. When Camilla Parker Bowles and King Charles were married in 2005 “it was widely believed that she would never be called queen” says the Daily Mail and the guide of the palace suggested that she would be known only as princess consort. But, things change, and considering King Charles, one can’t be too surprised by this choice.
Camilla Parker Bowles will be crowned at Westminster Abbey alongside her husband, King Charles, in a little over two two months.
