How To Channel The ’70s Cool From ‘Daisy Jones & The Six’

The ’70s are commonly thought of as an era of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, but it also left a major impact on fashion. Prime Video’s newest series Daisy Jones & The Six – which follows the rise and fall of the fictional band in 1977 – promises to offer insight to true ’70s fashion.

The adaption of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s beloved novel Daisy Jones & The Six has been several years in the making, with a production put on pause due to unforeseen circumstances. Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip in the 1970s, the series centers around the creative and romantic friction between the band’s two lead singers, Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin). The energy, emotions, music, and stakes are all high. The bandmates’ styles do a good job representing the era’s bohemian glamour.

“I did a lot of visual research on musicians, groupies, and kids on the Strip – I had so much inspiration. It was hard to peg down one; it was such a great time for fashion,” costume designer Denise Wingate told Elle. “When I was a teenager, I was always sneaking out of the house, going to clubs. I had a fake ID, so I knew the scene well. I read the book and was like, ‘I know these people. I know what it’s like to be on the road.'”

Reid’s novel description of Daisy pinpoints specific signature items such as her bangles, hoop earrings, and borrowed menswear. “There were things like when she comes to the recording studio wearing the man’s shirt and the cowboy boots, we couldn’t not do that,” Wingate said.

Here’s a look at some of the best styles of era as shown in the series, as well as a few ideas for how to wear them in order to channel Daisy and her cohort’s signature cool.

Flared Jeans

It wouldn’t be the ’70s without flared jeans. This series offers up major denim. Though Daisy and her bandmates wear everything from cutoff shorts to washed-out button-downs, it’s Daisy’s preference for high-waisted, flared cuts that carry the most star power.

Peasant Tops

Whether crocheted, embroidered, or rimmed in lace, the peasant top continues as one of the ’70s most iconic styles. Daisy wore hers layered under gauzy cover-ups for an effortless, earthy vibe – an excellent complement to jeans, boots, and shorts.

Knee-High Boots

Whether it’s cowboy, platform, python, or any other kind of boot, the choice is yours. Whichever you choose, just make sure they hit somewhere between the thigh and mid-calf. Obviously these are meant to be worn with miniskirts, prairie dresses and cutoff shorts.

Prairie Dresses

Flowy, romantic prairie dresses are the pinnacles of the mystical music goddess look – bonus points if it has lace, ruffles, or a floral print. And even better if the sleeves are extra long and drapey.

Leather Satchel

While accessories like shell necklaces, turquoise rings, and oversized sunglasses all held iconic spots in the ’70s hall of fame, it was Daisy’s rotation of Western leather satchels that were worth watching in the series.

Shearling Coats

’70s rock ‘n’ roll essentials always included a statement coat – but just make sure it has an extra-wide, fuzzy collar, and bountiful cuffs.
