Drew Barrymore is at a good place in her life. Her daytime show has been renewed for a fourth season, she’s sober, she’s back in the dating world, she’s co-parenting her children, and she has great friends. Those wonderful friends, including Cameron Diaz, are who helped her through her alcohol addiction battle.
In a new profile of Barrymore in The Los Angeles Times, Cameron Diaz talked about her close friend’s previous struggles with alcohol abuse and how she supported her through them.
Barrymore has previously spoken of how, after gaining fame as a child actor, she developed a drinking problem at the age of 11, became addicted to cocaine at 12, and was put into rehab at 13 for a suicide attempt. She then became emancipated from her parents at age 15 and moved into her own apartment in West Hollywood. Through the years, the actress has worked to get clean, but she relapsed in 2016 when her third marriage failed.
The profile showed that Barrymore started to heavily drink following her split from ex-husband Will Kopelman. The divorce came after Barrymore had somewhat made the decision to put her career on pause and move to New York City with her husband to raise their daughters near his family. Unfortunately, when the relationship failed, Barrymore turned to alcohol, causing her longtime therapist to dismiss her as a client, and alienating some of her friends.
Barrymore shared that she was in a destructive spiral when her therapist, Barry Michels, quit on her.
“He just said, ‘I can’t do this anymore,'” she said. “It was really about my drinking. I said, ‘I get it. I’ve never respected you more. You see I’m not getting better. And I hope, one day, that I can earn your trust back.'”
Diaz said that time was “difficult to watch.”
“But I knew that if we all stuck with her and gave her the support she needed, she would find her way,” Diaz told the outlet. “I have absolute faith in her. You can’t even comprehend how hard it was to be her as a child, and then she shot out the other end with the ability to save herself.”
Barrymore and Diaz, who starred alongside each other in the 2000 film Charlie’s Angels, have been close friends since the ’90s. Now that Barrymore is a television host, she has welcomed her friend on set multiple times.
Barrymore has spoken of her sobriety journey and alcohol addiction struggles on her show, and in the profile, she admitted it was the offer she got from CBS in 2019 to host her own talk show that motivated her to make a major change in her life.
“I think the opportunity at a show like this really hit me,” she said. “I was like, ‘I can’t handle this unless I’m in a really clear place.'”
