Even though Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid won’t be returning after she fell to her death in the Ionian Sea, fans of The White Lotus will be pleased to hear that Mike White’s popular series will be back for a third installment. Finally, after months of speculation, its new setting has been released.
On March 27, Variety reported that, following its two seasons centered on resorts in Maui in Hawaii, and Taormina on the east coast of Sicily, the new season will be held in Thailand. Multiple sources close to the production have confirmed the news to publication, adding that White has been spending time in the country scoping out sites.
As the first two seasons of The White Lotus were filmed at two Four Seasons hotels – The Four Season Resort Maui at Wailea, and San Domenico Palace, Taormina, A Four Seasons Hotel – it’s likely the third installment will take place at one of the luxury hotel’s other properties.
Even prior to the premiere of the second season, the showrunner had hinted at the possibility of an Asia-set third season, and later added that it could focus on themes that the series has yet to explore. “The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex,” he said, in a behind-the-scenes video released after the finale. “I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality.”
Beyond that, not much is known about the third season, though it is believed to feature a lineup of new faces, as season two did. It may be a while before production begins and casting announcements are made, but White is sure to have his pick of Hollywood A-list lineup when assembling his next cast. The only question left is: what do we expect from Greg?
