As more people become concerned with the number of healthy years we spend on this earth, we begin moving away from a “go hard or go home” workout mentality, recognizing the benefits of low-impact exercises. Note: the popularity of LISS, aka low-intensity steady state training. One method of LISS that is gaining popularity in particular is power walking.
Once considered a popular workout among old people, this form of exercise is now popular among people of all ages. A new study suggests that power walkers have the right idea, because this type of cardio can help us live longer.
The study followed 47,000 participants over seven years and looked at how power walking influenced mortality rates. One key takeaway from the study was that if we all power walked for 10 extra minutes per day, it could prevent over 111,000 deaths a year. Looking at it another way, adding 10 extra minutes of this exercise per day can increase our lifespan and longevity.
This means, for those of us who do zero power walking currently, committing to just 10 minutes per day can help increase our lifespan. Those of us who already do some of this cardio can keep doing what we’re doing, but just add an additional 10 minutes longer.
Keep in mind that power walking is more intense than regular walking, though not by much. Power walking is moving at a brisk pace and applying yourself enough to get your heart rate going, but to a level where you can still carry on a conversation. Time to pick up the pace.
