One of Prince William’s most well-known projects is, without a doubt, the Earthshot Prize. Now the prince has just signed Jacinda Ardern for the board of directors of this project, who was the first New Zealand minister until last January, when she announced her resignation due to exhaustion.
Prince William thanked Jacinda Ardern in a statement: :Her lifelong commitment to supporting sustainable and environmental solutions, coupled with her experience as New Zealand Prime Minister, will bring a wealth of new ideas to our mission. Four years before The Earthshot Prize had a name, Jacinda was one of the first people I spoke to, and her encouragement and advice were crucial to the early success of the prize. I am extremely grateful to her for joining us as we give the next steps in her career.”
The former New Zealand Prime Minister added that she is honored to be working with the Earthshot team, “since its inception, I have believed in the power of Earthshot to encourage and spread not only the innovation we desperately need, but also optimism. Solutions are within our grasp if we invest in, support and accelerate them globally.”
Prince William launched the Earthshot Prize in 2020 with Davide Attenborough with the goal of finding solutions to the planet’s largest environmental issues through new technologies and ideas. Each year, he recognizes five new individuals who have contributed to improving the earth in terms of sustainability, and each of them receives on million pounds to continue their environmental work.
In 2021, Hannah Jones, former director of sustainability at Nike was dubbed executive director of the program, and big names such as Rania Jordan, Cate Blanchett, Shakira and Yao Ming are also on the team as ambassadors. Now, Jacinda Ardern joins the Earthshot Awards Board of Directors just in time to participate in the selection of finalists for the 2023 awards.
