By the end of 2023, Timothée Chalamet will appear as both Paul Areides in the second installment of the Dune franchise and as Willy Wonka in a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel. But it’s his role in James Mangold’s 2024 Bob Dylan biopic that we’re most excited for. Titled A Complete Unknown, the project is set to start filming in August.
According to Mangold, Timothée Chalamet will also be singing Bob Dylan’s songs while embodying the “Subterranean Homesick Blues” musician. Fortunately, his role as Willy Wonka will have helped prepare his vocals: Chalamet will perform no less than seven musical numbers in Wonka.
Though Wonka may be sweet-natured, A Complete Unknown is meant to wrestle with more serious subject matters. “It’s such an amazing time in American culture and the story of… a young 19-year-old Bob Dylan coming to New York with like two dollars in his pocket and becoming a worldwide sensation within three years,” Mangold told Collider in an interview in April. “First being embraced into the family of fold music in New York, and kind of outrunning them at a certain point as his star rises so beyond belief.” Other folk artists represented in the biopic included Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez and Pete Seeger.
According to Deadline, the movie will focus on Dylan’s pivot to rock ‘n’ roll with his 1965 album, Bringing It All Back Home, in which he played electric guitar for the first time. Fans’ reactions to this release were notably intense. Though we can expect nothing but admiration from Chalamet’s performance.
