Prince Harry Will Attend King Charles’s Coronation Without Meghan Markle

Prince Harry will head to London sans Meghan Markle. The couple confirmed on Wednesday April 12, 2023 that the Duke of Sussex will attend the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday May 6, 2023, but his wife, Meghan, will stay home in California to celebrate their son Archie’s fourth birthday.

The couple issued a statement along the same lines as the palace: “The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th. The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.”

The news comes months following speculation over the possibility of an invitation to the official coronation of the next king, after a period of tension between the Sussexes and the rest of the royals.

Prince Harry and Meghan starred in Netflix’s series about their relationship, which featured candid discussions of the challenges their relationship has faced not only in the face of intense British tabloid scrutiny, but also within the royal institution itself. After the two-part documentary series aired in December 2022, Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace both refrained for comment.

In January 2023, Prince Harry released his best-selling memoir, Spare. In the memoir, the Duke of Sussex claims Prince William physically abused him and his stepmother, Queen Consort Camilla, leaked information to the press, casting doubt on their presence at the coronation. In early March 2023, the Sussexes confirmed that they had been asked to leave their home at Frogmore Cottage. Despite the tension, it looks like there will be a reunion in Windsor in May, even though Prince Harry will be the only one attending the coronation.

The last time the Sussexes were even seen in public with other senior royals was at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. The Cambridges and Sussexes were seen together on September 10, 2022, before the funeral, to collect flowers from well-wishers on the the Long Walk at Windsor Castle, before walking together behind the Queen’s coffin as it was transferred from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall.

As for the coronation of King Charles III, Prince Harry’s role has not been disclosed, especially since he no longer holds any official royal responsibilities. Even without his wife, the family reunion will be closely followed.
