A Documentary Dedicated To Anna Nicole Smith Is Coming To Netflix

Anna Nicole Smith, who died on February 8, 2007 following an accidental overdose, is the new subject of a Netflix documentary, entitled The One You Think You Know: Anna Nicole Smith. The documentary is set to air May 16, 2023.

“I would just advise people to follow their dreams,” Anna Nicole says in the trailer. “They can come true. I’m living proof.”

Born Vicki Lynn Hogan in Houston, Texas on November 28, 1967, the young girl did not have much of a happy childhood. Vicki Lynn dropped out of school at the age of 14 and worked at a fried chicken restaurant where she met Billy Wayne Smith, who she married and gave birth to a son, Daniel Wayne Smith. They split after two years. Vicki Lynn went from odd job to odd job, and decided to become a stripper, under the assumed names Nikki and Robin. A big fan of Marilyn Monroe, and following a meeting with a photographer from a modeling agency, Vicki Lynn underwent cosmetic surgery, enhancing her breasts. Anna Nicole Smith was then born. Then 24, she met 86-year-old billionaire named J. Howard Marshall. The two married two years later.

In 1992, Anna Nicole Smith was elected Miss May 1992 by Playboy magazine. This earned her a huge spotlight. Her relationship with J. Howard Marshall was strongly criticized and perceived as self-serving. When Marshall died in 1995, a legal battle began between Anna Nicole and her late husband’s son and heir. Though she does not appear in his will, Anna Nicole claims that he had verbally promised her half of his estate. Eventually, the judge agreed to pay her $88 million from her late husband’s estate, but the decision would later be overturned by the San Francisco Court of Appeals. The action still continues even after the death of the model in 2007, on behalf of her daughter Danielle Lynn Birkhead.

In 2002, Anna Nicole Smith was the center of her own E! reality show, called The Anna Nicole Show. Throughout the episodes, she showed she had no limits, viewers saw her drunk, swearing and having difficulty articulating. The show ended after two years due to lack of viewers.

In 2006 the model was hospitalized with pneumonia. On February 8, 2007, she was found unconscious in her hotel room in Florida. She died the same day at the age of 39. The final autopsy revealed that she died of an accidental drug overdose.

The documentary The One You Think You Know: Anna Nicole Smith will show the model’s rise from her status as a playmate in 1992, to her marriage to J. Howard Marshall, to her death in 2007. The documentary will directed by Ursula Macfarlane through never-before-seen footage, featuring personal videos and exclusive interviews with the playmate’s loved ones, revealing well-kept secrets and giving us a new look at the star.

“I feel like many previous books and films about Anna Nicole twisted her narrative, so I felt fortunate to have access to a wealth of audio and TV interviews including personal phone calls that involved Anna Nicole,” Macfarlane told Netflix’s Tudum website. “I really feel like she is telling her own story in her own words and with the contributions of people in her life who genuinely knew her, I feel that we’ve been able to get closer to her truth.”

See you May 16 on Netflix.
