Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton might be teaming up again. The news has just been announced: Warner Bros is coming out with Beetlejuice 2, the popular horror film from the late 1980s, in a new version still by Tim Burton. This time around Jenna Ortega will play Lydia, the iconic character played in the original film by Winona Ryder.
Beetlejuice tells the story of two newlyweds who die in a car accident and come back as ghosts to haunt their old home, completely determined to protect their home from the family of New Yorkers who want to redecorate the whole house. The ghosts befriend Lydia, the goth teen daughter, and she will do just about anything to help the ghosts, even approach the mischievous Beetlejuice, who has a wedding in mind for the two of them in order to return to the world of the living.
Burton directed the original Beetlejuice in 1988, which starred Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jordan, Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, and Michael Keaton. The film made nearly $75 million on a $15 million budget at the box office and became a cult hit. A rumored sequel has been in development for years, but Burton’s involvement has always been in question. According to the Hollywood Reporter, both Burton and Keaton are now both on board for the sequel.
Even though Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton didn’t always see eye-to-eye on the first season of Wednesday, it seems they may have resolved their conflicts as Jenna Ortega is now an executive producer for the second season of the series. Now, the collaboration between Ortega and Tim Burton can continue for success. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jenna Ortega is considering reprising the role of Lydia, alongside Michael Keaton, in the sequel to Beetlejuice. Ortega, of course, is no stranger to franchises of horror-comedy. She currently stars in the Scream franchise, and became a big hit in Netflix’s series Wednesday.
Production is set to begin around June 2023.
