American Idol fans got a big surprise this week. The show’s judges, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, called into this week’s episode via a video filmed at Windsor Castle, where the two had just performed at the blowout Coronation Concert for King Charles and Queen Camilla. Appearing in what looked to be a regal throne room, the American Idol judges reflected on the experience of witnessing the coronation of King Charles.
“What a party. It was unbelievable,” Richie said.
Katy Perry added, “It was incredible.”
“Now, we’re trying to figure out what can we do to bring something different to the show,” Richie said. “Excuse me, Katy. I have a surprise.”
The new king and queen entered the room, stepping in between Perry and Richie. Perry reacted excitedly to the monarch’s sudden appearance, saying, “Oh goodness, Your Majesties.” She even curtsied.
The king moved into the camera’s view, making a passing reference to Richie’s iconic song, “All Night Long,” asking if the musicians planned to use his castle’s room “all night long.” The monarch continued teasing them, adding, “I just wanted to check how long you’ll be using this room for.”
Richie responded, “We have to give the room up right away.”
The new king thanked Richie and Perry for their performances. “Thank you so much, you’re brilliant performers and Katy was wonderful,” he said. “It really was. A great treat to have you both here.”
Queen Consort Camilla added, “Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic.”
Perry joked with Camilla, asking, “Are we making too much noise?” To which Camilla replied jokingly, “Not enough rock.”
Richie wasn’t finished with the king. He said, “We understand there’s a party.”
King Charles responded, “You’ve heard about that?”
“Well, you’re throwing the party right next door.”
“That’s right,” the monarch said. “So, had we better not take you to the party? But you’re busy with all these other things.”
Eagerly, both Richie and Perry said, “We’re coming to the party.”
King Charles approved their excitement, agreeing, “Well, you deserve it.”
