The sober curious movement is growing strongly, but, unfortunately, many people still seem to think that non-drinkers are no fun. “Why aren’t you drinking?” and “Don’t you want to have fun?” get tossed at you as if they aren’t super personal questions to ask a person. Going to a party or bar with a group sober, unfortunately, means encountering some of these sobriety issues. But it doesn’t mean we are doomed to have a bad time. So, here are some tips on how to party when you’re sober or cutting back on drinking.
Don’t play the babysitter
Just because you’re not throwing back shots, doesn’t mean you are obligated to be the designated driver. If you aren’t drinking, make sure to bring your own vehicle or Uber so you don’t get stuck and feel obligated waiting on someone who is drinking or driving someone who wants to stay until late hours in the night. This way, you can leave when you want and not worry about anyone else.
Set advance expectations
If you don’t wish to drink or don’t want to drink a lot, time management and creating boundaries with your time is essential. Tell the host or your friend group in advance that you can only stay for an hour or so, or that you would like to come and join but must leave early. If you communicate your time limit upfront, you won’t feel guilty about leaving. Also set expectations with yourself. Try to commit to one drink per event or nothing at all.
BYO(non-alcoholic)B
Bring your own sparkling waters, kombucha, non-alcoholic beers, or any other non-alcoholic beverage so you know you will have something you can hold onto and don’t have to rely on the host to have something you will enjoy.
Have a friend on your level
Bring a supportive friend to the party or bar with you who won’t be drinking or who agrees to just one beverage, so that you have support and don’t feel peer pressure. Having a support system via text is also helpful.
Create plans for the following day
Make accountability for the next day. This may be scheduling a walk with a friend, booking an exercise class, or making coffee date plans – something that will help you want to wake up early and without a hangover. Be proud that you gave yourself these boundaries and stuck to them.
