Samantha Jones is headed back to our screens. The iconic character is returning for the second season of And Just Like That… According to Variety, Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha in the original Sex and the City series from 1998 to 2004, as well as in the two films, is confirmed to be making a cameo appearance in HBO’s spin-off series.
Kim Cattrall will appear in one scene, which reportedly includes a phone conversation between her and Carrie Bradshaw. She is not expected to appear with any of the other characters on screen, or as part of the main cast.
Samantha Jones was referenced throughout the first season of And Just Like That…, with Samantha and Carrie making plans, and she even sent flowers on the day of Mr. Big’s funeral.
The news of Cattrall’s return may come as a big shock to many Sex and the City fans, following a long public feud between Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker, with the actress reportedly refusing to take part in the first season of And Just Like That… Previously, the actress detailed how Parker prevented her from forming close relationships with Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis throughout the show’s filming, and even called Parker “cruel” in a 2018 Instagram post.
HBO’s chief content officer, Casey Bloys, previously mentioned that Samantha’s absence would always be a part of the show’s overall storyline.
“They aren’t trying to re-do Sex and the City. They’re not trying to say that these characters are reliving their 30s,” Bloys said of the first season. “It is very much a story about women in their 50s, and they are dealing with things that people deal with in their 50s.”
He continued, “Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life.”
