Here’s Why And How You Should Be Romanticizing Your Life

Our every day life can bring us down, thanks to the dullness of routine and schedule. As much as we love our daily rituals, we sometimes forget to really savor them, zoom out, and imagine ourselves as the star of our own movie. We might even be taking ourselves for granted – constantly seeking happiness rather than taking the time to recognize all that is in the here and now. Luckily, we don’t need a perfect date or big work promotion to bring meaning to our lives. The key is simply by romanticizing your life, as it is, right this moment.

“Romanticizing your life is a way to explore mindfulness by being present in moments of your daily life. Through the act of romanticizing your life, you become more in touch with your actions, thoughts, and emotions as you go about your day,” says Dr. Nina Vasan, the Chief Medical Officer at Real.

Mindfulness is one of the top ways to increase your mental health, as it has been shown to decrease anxiety and depression, as well as increase productivity and longevity.

“Because romanticizing your life is a form of mindfulness, I believe it can be incredibly beneficial,” continues Vasan.

Another way romanticizing your life can improve your mental health is through the incorporation of gratitude. For example, if you are moving through your daily life more intentionally, you will have added opportunities to find and practice gratitude, which is an incredibly powerful tool. It is important to remember that romanticizing your life does not mean disregarding or ignoring negative parts of your life. Rather, it means reframing them into something more inspiring and meaningful.

“Romanticizing your life will look different for each person because it depends on what brings you joy. Focus on simple pleasure in your daily life and use those as a starting place to build ways to love yourself on a regular basis,” Dr. Vasan suggests.

Some ways to romanticize your every day life:

Skip a shower and take a luxurious bath

This may mean picking up those nice essential oils or soothing bath salts you’ve been wanting. Relaxing in warm water can feel incredibly soothing.

Find time to read something for fun

Isn’t it fun to escape into stories? When is the last time you read something other than social media or the news?

Unplug from your devices

Turn your phone off and take a walk around the neighborhood or park.

Upgrade your favorite routine

Maybe you love your breakfast routine or perhaps you enjoy winding down before bed. Find ways to ritualize these moments and some special touches.

Spend time in nature

Go outside and appreciate the beauty of the natural world around you.

Notice the small things

Take the time to appreciate the little moments in life that often go unnoticed, such as a sunny day or the sound of birds chirping.
