Buckingham Palace will once again open its doors to the public this summer, this year as part of a special coronation celebration. It will mark the 30th year that Buckingham Palace has allowed people to visit the state rooms throughout the summer months.
The outfits worn to the coronation by King Charles III and Queen Camilla – which took place at Westminster Abbey on 6 May – will be on display in the ballroom as part of the ‘Summer Opening of the State Rooms’.
The King’s robe – worn by his great-grandfather King George V and grandfather King George VI for their own coronation ceremonies and conserved by robe makers Edge and Ravenscroft – will be available for public viewing, so visitors can see for themselves the complex detail that went into creating a piece of royal fashion history.
Queen Camilla’s robe – made for this year’s coronation by Edge and Ravenscroft and hand-embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework – was inspired by nature and reflects her love for the environment. It features floral emblems of the United Kingdom, 20 different plants chosen by the royal pair and various insects including bees and butterflies. Visitors can also see the sweet personal details up close, such as the Queen’s children and grandchildren’s names are hand stitched onto the robe, as well as her dogs.
Like always with any royal exhibition, jewelry plays a huge part. Camilla’s extraordinary coronation necklace will be featured in the display, originally created for Queen Victoria in 1858 and has been worn to every royal coronation since 1902. In addition to the royals’ clothes and jewelry, the Anointing Screen, Throne Chairs and coronation invitations will also go on public display as part of the special exhibition.
‘Summer Opening of the State Rooms’ at Buckingham Palace opens 14 July until 24 September 2023. Book tickets here
