The Five Best Surf Movies To Rewatch Now

Looking for the best surf movies to watch before hitting the waves this summer? Here’s a guide of the best surf movies to watch this season before a session.

The Endless Summer (1966)

In search of the perfect wave, these surfers of the 1960s are the heroes of this cult documentary film by Bruce Brown. Topped by the Beach Boys music, we follow the surfers around the world, from Hawaii to New Zealand to South Africa.

Big Wednesday (1978)

An incredibly popular surf movie, Big Wednesday immerses us into Malibu of the 60s and 70s to meet three young, handsome and tanned surfers Matt, Jack and Leroy, who will gradually experience disillusionment with the violence of the time (Vietnam War) and the responsibilities of adulthood. An ode and nostalgic chronicle to the end of innocence.

Point Break (1991)

An adrenaline booster with iodized scents, Point Break pairs Keanu Reeves with Patrick Swayze for a face-to-face under high tension. Reeves plays a FBI agent who has infiltrated a group of surfers suspected of robberies. The surfers’ mode of action was to arrive dressed up as presidents of the United States. Among the surfers is Bodhi, the leader, played by Patrick Swayze with bleached blonde hair and tanned complexion, who dreams of surfing the perfect wave. Agent Johnny Utah (Reeves) gradually takes a liking to this freedom and falls under the spell of a surfer from the group, jeopardizing his cover. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, Point Break is one of the best surf movies of all time.

Blue Crush (2002)

Far from being a fantastic film, Blue Crush is worth a look. On the one hand for its heroines, who, it should be noted, are some of the first women to be the first main characters of a surf film, on the other hand for its awesome aesthetics of the 2000s. The story? Traumatized by an accident, a former surfing star (Kate Bosworth) attempts to relaunch her surfing career while having to care for her little sister, after their mother abandons them.

Chasing Mavericks (2012)

Based on a true story, Gerard Butler takes on the role of a passionate surfer in Chasing Mavericks, helping the young prodigy Jay Moriarity to face one of the most dangerous waves in the world, taking its place in the mythical Mavericks spot, near Santa Cruz.
