6 Fun Facts About ‘Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince’

In the sixth installment of the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where Death Eaters begin to make their way into Hogwarts, Harry, assisted by Dumbledore, tries to access Voldemort’s secrets to better face him in the final war, which is fast approaching. In honor of Harry Potter’s birthday, today, July 31, here are six facts you should know about this film.

The return of David Yates

David Yates is, along with Chris Columbus, one of the only directors to have signed two films of the series. Following Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the director David Yates returns for the next installment, a decision taken after the production considered giving the task to Guillermo del Toro.

A late release

Initially scheduled for November 2008, the film’s release was finally postponed to July 2009. An almost unforgivable blow for fans of the series, to whom Alan Horn, president of Warner Bros studios, explained in an open letter: “There would have been a two-year wait between Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which is due out in November 2010 ” therefore to reduce the output gap between the two films. “I’m sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you wait a little longer, I think it will be worth it,” added Horn at the end of his letter.

Voldemort family affair

Ralph Fiennes played Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 & 2. In the sixth film, we learn a lot about Voldemort’s youth. A young Tom Riddle (Aka Voldemort) is played by two different actors in this film: Frank Dillane (who plays a teenage Tom Riddle) and Hero Fiennes Tiffin (who plays the child Tom Riddle). Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Ralph Fiennes are real-life nephew and uncle who share the same affinity for Lord Voldemort.

Misdate

In a scene from the film, viewers see the Millennium Bridge, a suspension bridge built in London in the year 2000, destroyed following an attack by Death Eaters. However, if we stick to the timeline of the Harry Potter books, this book takes place in 1996, four years prior to the construction of the book. The author gave her consent to the production to add this misdated scene to the film, which does not exist in the book.

Assistant director

In the film’s credits, James Phelps, who plays Fred Weasley in all episodes of the saga, is credited twice. As an actor first, but also as an assistant director. He was asked to assist David Yates on the set and learn the basics of the trade.

Narcissa Malfoy

The actress Helen McCrory, who plays Narcissa Malfoy, was first approached to play the role of Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Due to being pregnant at the time of the filming, she had to pass up the role of Bellatrix, as well as the movie. She was approached again, and finally appeared in this installment as Narcissa Malfoy, the mother of Draco, a role that she takes on brilliantly.
