Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought their gorgeous villa with a sea view, Villa Mabrouka (“lucky villa” in Arabic) in Tangier in 1990. Interior designer Jacques Grange handled the furnishing project, as the couple wanted at the time “to imagine the house of an eccentric Englishman from the 1950s who came to live in the city. Yves wanted a different chintz and color for each room: a blue room, a yellow one and so on,” writes Grange in the book Les Paradis Secrets d’Yves Saint Laurent et Pierre Bergé.
Yves Saint Laurent’s home in Tangier, an intimate home, hidden from prying eyes for decades, has been transformed into a hotel thanks to the acquisition and restyling of British designer Jasper Conran, its current owner.
Surrounded by bougainvillea, palm trees, fruit trees, holly, roses, jasmine and orange blossoms which mark Tangier’s most stunning garden (the landscape designer is Madison Cox, president of the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation), a little commotion of the Kasbah and the Medina of the famous white city, the structure has twelve colorful rooms that the designer sought to revive without losing any of the fashionable legacy of the creative couple and with the utmost respect for the original structure and the distinctive Moroccan architecture.
In addition to the large swimming pool, carved into the rock, Conran built another emerald pool, designed three restaurants and remade all the furniture (with the exception of the Murano chandeliers) with the help of the best local craftsmen.
Located atop a cliff overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, five minutes from the center of Tangier, the hotel is within walking distance of the Medina, making it a favorite stopping point when visiting the White City.
