If we had to pick out just one look that will never get old, but that’s currently gaining popularity, it’s undoubtedly the Bardot neckline. Popularized in the 60s by the iconic French actress, this straight-cut neckline that leaves the shoulders bare, subtly sensual and romantic, is making a huge comeback on the catwalks, in tops and dresses, and is favored by celebrities.
The spring/summer and autumn/winter 2023 catwalks showed the Bardot neckline in dresses wrapped in stretch knit (like at Ganni and Aliaïa) and in sinuous sheath dresses draped to sculpt the body as seen at Dolce & Gabbana. At Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli showed off a Bardot neckline on a white shirt, worn over a skin-colored tank top.
The Bardot neckline returns to the forefront with an elegant touch. Meghan Markle has repeatedly worn looks with this neckline, including the blush pink Carolina Herrera dress she wore to the Trooping the Color ceremony in 2018. In May 2022, Kate Middleton attended the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in a black & white dress in stretch crepe by Roland Mouret with a Bardot neckline, leaving the shoulders elegantly uncovered.
Many different inspirations playing with the neckline arise from celebs and fashion insiders. Scandinavian model Elsa Hosk chose a 90s-inspired dress with an asymmetrical fit. Hailey Beiber worked a Bardot neckline with a top paired with hot pants by Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello. Kendall Jenner opted for a Jean Paul Gaulteir dress which revisited the iconic 90s Cyber Dot pattern. We’ve seen the neckline over and over again, and don’t expect it to disappear any time soon.
