It’s official, the next biopic we’re looking forward to is the one about Christian Dior. Announced three days ago by Variety, the film will be produced by Elsa Zylberstein, whose mother worked for the perfumes of the French house for many years. The fashion world is therefore familiar to the filmmaker, whose passion – and talent – ??for biopics was recently praised in Simone: Woman of the Century (Simone, le Voyage du Siècle), Olivier Dahan’s most recent feature film, which won the César award last February.
The film will begin in Paris, in 1947, the day following the presentation of Christian Dior’s first collection, and will span a decade until his death in 1957. The biopic allows the opportunity to see the designer’s rise within the fashion house at 30 avenue Montaigne, supported by the director of the studio Raymonde Zehnacker. The film will also include more intimate moments of his life, such as meeting with Jacques Benita, an artist much younger than him with whom he fell in love.
“Christian Dior remained very reserved about his personal life, so much so that in the end we know very little about him. He was not one of those flamboyant characters that you could meet at the time on the fashion or creative scene, but he was nonetheless fascinating,” said Zylberstein. “Christian Dior was quite normal, he was not Parisian but originally from Normandy. He was always discreet, and at the same time very resilient. It is in part for this strength that his legacy is so strong today.”
Zylberstein says that the film will explore the trio’s love triangle and she will star in the film as Zehnacker. “Behind every successful man there’s a woman, and that was also true for Dior,” she told Variety.
The film will be developed by Sonia Films, the production company of Zylberstein and Odile MacDonald. No filming or release date has yet been announced.
