To recognize the one-year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, her son King Charles III has honored the occasion in the sweetest way.
The royal paid tribute to his mother’s legacy by releasing a recorded audio message alongside a portrait of her during her reign.
“In marking the first anniversary of Her late Majesty’s death and my Accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us,” King Charles says in the audio message, shared by Buckingham Palace. “I am deeply grateful, too, for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all.”
Alongside the audio message, King Charles released a special portrait of Queen Elizabeth that was captured at Buckingham Palace on 16 October 1968. The portrait was part of an official sitting by photographer Cecil Beaton. The image was chosen personally by the monarch to signify the anniversary of her death. Royal history fans will recognize the photo, as it has been shown once before, as it was displayed at the National Portrait Gallery as part of its first photographic exhibition, from November 1968 to March 1969.
On September 9, 2022, royal history was made as Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully at Balmoral. On that day, Charles shared a sweet tribute to his mother, as her family and the country began to mourn her.
“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” he said. “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”
