Flared Pants Are Set To Be The Next Big Pants Trend

Everyone assumed that cargo pants were going to continue their rise and take over the streets this autumn. Wrong, they seem to have lost appeal to flared pants. The iconic 70s pants have already been seen on Blake Lively and Rita Ora at the Spring/Summer 2024 shows of New York Fashion Week.

It was in the United States, as early as 1817, that flared pants first appeared, as a key part of the military uniform worn by the sailors of the US Navy. Recognizable by their flared cut, these pants were designed so that soldiers could roll them up when walking in water.

On the fashion scene, flared pants had their introduction in the late 1960s, thanks to the arrival of the hippie culture. It wasn’t until 1970, however, that they were adopted by women. They were then forgotten for some time, before making a comeback in the 2000s, when the excellent tacky-chic period occurred, which also saw the birth of candy-pink outfits, rhinestone glasses, trucker hats and Juicy Couture tracksuits.

This season, designers have taken the trend back to the ’70s. Flared pants are fluid, in stretch fabrics and daring colors. Courrèges offers a classic, chic black piece, JW Anderson dyes them bright blue, while Diesel favors denim and Michael Kors adds disco touches.
