The autumn/winter 2023 season may have lacked the spark you might expect from clothes marketed around the party season, as there were more neutral hoodies and pea coats than sparkly handbags. The general mood for the season might have been refined, however that doesn’t mean there weren’t some party dresses thrown in there occasionally, too. Metallics are an essential in every single autumn/winter trend report, and this year they provided some much-needed color and personality to a season that was predominately made up of black, grey, navy and brown basics. There were gold sweeping gowns that will be ready when red carpets are back in action, but the runways also provided some fresh ways to wear sequins for the coming months. Keep reading for four ways to wear metallics this season, ranging from tinsel to handbags.
With tights or leggings
Tone down your high-shine metallics with either black leggings or tights, as seen at Ferragamo or Isabel Marant.
Tinsel textures
At Simone Rocha, the runway turned into a Christmas-festive event in crinkled molten fabrics, which were designed into miniskirts, dresses, coats and puff-sleeve tops. Gucci turned things up with a fringed silver coat that looked like the model had been wrapped in a foil curtain.
With color metallics
Metallics are often limited to silvers and golds, but for winter expect to see neutrals, reds, greens, blues and more colors sparkling just as bright.
Metallic handbags
The simplest and most low-key way to add a metallics to any outfit is to carry a mirrored handbag, as seen at Balmain, Luar and Coperni. At Molly Goddard a foil shoulder bag was used to add an unexpected twist to a daytime cardigan and tights look.
