Taylor Swift honored Ana Clara Benevides Machado, the fan who passed away at one of her recent concerts, by visiting the young woman’s family. Benevides Machado, 23, died while attending Swift’s concert in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, on November 17 after suffering cardiac arrest likely as a result of the extreme heat wave.
This Sunday, the superstar met with Benevides Machado’s family members prior to her concert at Allianz Parque in São Paulo, Brazil. The family wore T-shirts with a photo of Benevides Machado while posing for photos backstage with Taylor Swift, who wore a glittery red leotard. The images were later shared on social media.
“Taylor Swift with Ana Benevides’ family tonight! #TStheErasTour,” the official Eras Tour X account wrote in a post alongside the picture.
The singer previously spoke about Benevides Machado’s death in an emotional message posted to her Instagram Story shortly after her passing.
“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show,” she wrote. “I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”
“I’m not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it. I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil,” she added.
Swift canceled her next show following the incident, and upon her return honored Benevides Machado with an emotional rendition of “Bigger Than the Whole Sky.”
“Goodby, goodbye, goodbye / You were bigger than the whole sky / You were more than just a short time,” Swift sang as tears visibly rolled down her face. “I’m never gonna meet / What could’ve been, would’ve been / What should’ve been you / What could’ve been, would’ve been you,” she sang.
