“Layering” is one those fashion terms that is often over-used, but in reality will mean different things, depending on your own personal style. For maximalists, layering can be the art of pairing together textures, colors, patterns and prints. For minimalists, it can about subtle details, such as a shirt hemline peeking beneath a sweater.
While some people use the art of layering for aesthetic reasons, it is also a highly functional way of dressing for colder weather. There is invisible layering – wearing a thermal base that never sees the light of day, or slipping tights under trousers when the temps drop. There there is intentional (visible) layering: wearing a cardigan on top of another knit, contrasting two items of varying lengths or adorning an outfit with a scarf.
Not sure where to begin? First, check the forecast. Nobody wants to realize they’re too cold the moment they step out of the house, or to sweat profusely. The nice thing about layering is that you can remove layers when entering warm environments – but you have to get the foundations correct to achieve this. In point: don’t wear a long sleeve shirt with your thickest wool sweater and a puffer coat when the winter sun is shining, and avoid wearing a tank top and sweater vest if the weather is looking especially dismal.
