With the SAG, Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe-nominated role in Only Murders in the Building, Selena Gomez has proven herself as an actress, but there’s still one thing that she has yet to do: play a musical superstar on screen. Now she will finally get to star in a musical biopic.
On 10 January, Variety confirmed that Selena Gomez will be playing 11-time Grammy winner Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic. The country, rock ‘n’ roll and Latin music legend, who found success in the ’70s with a line of albums featuring Heart Like a Wheel and Simple Dreams, is of Mexican descent, like Gomez. Ronstadt’s manager, John Boylan, is among the producers of the new project, alongside James Keach, who produced the 2019 documentary Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, a look-back of the musician’s nearly five-decade-long career.
Gomez teased her upcoming role via Instagram Stories on 9 January, posting a photo of Ronstadt’s 2013 memoir Simple Dreams, which describes how a young girl from a modest family on the edge of Tucson was able to rise to the top of the music industry. With the film currently in pre-production, make sure to keep an eye out for the actress’s future posts for more behind the scenes.
